The Memphis City Sound Chorus is a membership organization of women singers, who meet regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun. We have singers of all ages, all walks of life, and all parts of the Memphis area.
The main purpose of Memphis City Sound Chorus is to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows, a number of community events, and at an annual competitions. We also perform Singing Telegrams on Valentines Day. We are available to sing at your next function or event. If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Hire Us section.
In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing, especially in the barbershop style. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. Multiple times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.
In the spring of 2015, Memphis City Sound Chorus participated in the Region 25 chorus competition in Tulsa, OK, where were excited to place 2nd in Division A (Small Chorus Division). Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall in a city selected each year. In 2015 and 2016, International Competition is being held in Las Vegas, NV. We look forward to competing again at our Regional chorus competition in March of 2016.
Most choruses have a number of members who form their own quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. The Memphis City Sound Chorus currently is home to the quartet Encore.
The Memphis City Sound Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines, International, a non-profit organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The Headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Memphis City sound was previously featured in the "M" section of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. We were thrilled to have reporter Samantha Bryson join us at our rehearsal and interview many of our chorus members. She did a wonderful job of capturing the spirit of our chorus.
